1. Some good places in western Victoria (as reviewed by Helen Cekalovic, who, after 7 years with us, has just left to do her PhD) –
Clocks by the Bay (restaurant; Portland): "fancy but reasonably priced. I had the Trio of Duck - very tasty - peking duck, drumstick and duck spring roll. Five different Oysters - which were very inventive - one oyster was covered in lemon granita, another in a shot glass of tomato salsa... yum!"
"Best bread rolls in the world - so soft" - bakery on Julia Street, Portland.
Fish n chip shop at the Wharf on the river (Port Fairy): "New York Style Fish Chowder at the - $4.95 with a little dinner roll."
Best hamburgers - Carisbrook Petrol station: "with farm fresh eggs – yum".
Best petrol station – Ballarat, corner of Ballarat Burrumbeet Road and Gilles St: "the unleaded pump has the hook thing so you don't have to hold the darn thing for eternity while the huge tank is being filled - and the air pump is electronic – cool".
